AFTER YEARS OF TAKING IT FOR RANTED, we have suddenly discovered that education is not merely useful but absolutely necessary for our way of life. To keep the world we live in running requires the production of intelligent people in ever-increasing numbers. Education has become essential to survival! As a consequence, people everywhere are taking a good hard look at our public schools to find out if they truly meet our needs. Some of the improvements we seek in education can be brought about by spending more money, by building better schools, by introducing new courses of study, new standards, or new equipment. But the really important changes will only come about as teachers change.
