520 _aThe purpose of this new edition is to refine and extend the earlier materials pertaining to the evolution of management thought. Users of the first edition will find the same basic chronological framework in the present edition. The changes are primarily to refine the telling of history, to incorporate recent research findings, and to bring developments up to the present. Materials have been added on figures such as Pierre DuPont and Harry Hope; more is included in personnel and labor history; the changing expectations regarding business and society receive a greater emphasis; and developments in the modern era are brought up to date. My continuing hope is that students will find in these pages the reward of knowing the past as a prologue to the future. I tried to make the book an unfolding story about the lives and the times of those who are our intellectual predecessors.
