520 _aThis textbook is intended for introductory level college and university courses that are modeled after the CSI course of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Curriculum Recommendations. Its primary objective is to teach problem solving using computers. For this purpose, the book uses the C++ programming language. It teaches structured procedural programming and at the same time provides a gentle introduction to object-oriented programming. This book is suitable for use by students with little or no programming background. The complete book can be easily covered in a one-semester or one-quarter introductory course on problem solving. The preliminary version of this textbook has been successfully class-tested in six CS1-type course sections at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The text can also be used for self-study by students or professional programmers.
