520 _aTHE FIRST KENT SEMINAR on The Christian Idea of Education was held in November of 1955. Opening the Seminar, the Reverend John O. Patterson, Rector and Headmaster said, "It is our hope that this meeting may be a means of regaining and restating something of the vision of what general education could be within a Christ-centered culture." From its papers and discussions grew the book entitled The Christian Idea of Education, published in 1957. It has enjoyed wide acceptance as a basic document on the relevance of Christian belief and thought to the whole enterprise of education. These discussions have an immediate and particular bearing upon independent schools, especially church-related schools; but they are not limited to this important field. The order of words is significant. We are speaking not of the idea of Christian education, which is a specific subject, but rather of the Christian idea of education. Religious instruction or commitment per se are not at the center of either of the seminars, but rather the total curriculum of modern education in the arts and sciences, seen within a Christian conception of the order of priorities, values, and standards.
