John Robert was a remarkable historian, whose one-volume history of the world is probably the finest ever produced in english. When I first rea it, as a teenager growing up in small town, I was struck by the scope of it all: Robert does not just recount history, he tells it; he present the great outline of human development without losing track of big stories that drove it forward.
