Starting with the Short Story Category in both English and Filipino, the awards has since elicited an overwhelming response from talented writers in the country. Thus, the Foundation added new categories: Essays, Poetry, Novel, One-Act Play, Full-length Play, Telepathy, Screenplay, and Short Story for Children. In 1997, it introduced three more: Ilocano, Cebuano, and Hilgaynon Short Story. In 1996, the Foundation, in its continuing efforts to help enrich the country's cultural heritage, started to conduct Creative Writing Workshops in Manila and the provinces. Dramatic readings of ward-winning works have also been conducted in colleges and universities. In this volume of selected winning literary works, the Foundation celebrates the talent of the Filipino writer--a proof of its commitment to the development of Philippine literature.
