This book is not an argument for the value of placing art in the contemporary environment. Today's urgent concern for the quality of life places a heavy burden of responsibility upon those people and groups -- environmental designers, community organizations, governmental agencies, business, and other institutions who play significant roles in determining the quality of the physical environment. These people are all well aware of the essential contribution of the visual arts.
