Responding to an initiative by the Henry B. Luce Foundation that encouraged better coordination in the selective purchase and management of the collective library resources of American universities, the Committee on Research Materials on Southeast Asia (CORMOSEA) in May of 1988 designated the South and Southeast Asia Library Service at the University of California, Berkeley, as the site for establishment of a Philippine Documentation Project (PDP).
