In recent years the research paper has become a requirement for almost all college students, and their complaints can be heard on every campus where they are subjected to this discipline. The undergraduate research paper is difficult for several rea-sons. First of all it requires a kind of careful logic, close reading, and general precision that is not ordinarily demanded in the short, often subjective, essays with which most students begin their training in composition. Second, the students are not always made to understand exactly what these research exercises are all about.
