The Madeline books have long been classics and have been translated into many languages. However, as the years passed, the Bemelmans books for adults became more and more difficult to find. Yet I continued to hear from ardent fans, some of whom had an almost cult like devotion to the author. A woman wrote from California that every word was like "apricot nectar." A man living in Flemington, New Jersey, quoted verbatim passages that I had forgotten.
