This novel was based partly on actual history. A rogue Japanese WWII soldier who had been hiding in the jungles of the Philippines surrendered to President Ferdinand Marcos in the 1970s. Amok is the Tagalog word for mosquito. The antagonist in the novel is a very skilled warrior who can come and go, as stealthy as the mosquito. The people in the villages have lived in fear of this man. Amok is a relic from WWII. He has spent the past thirty years murdering anybody who crosses his path. Skilled with a katana and versed in the art of woodcraft, he has managed to elude capture. This is a fine war novel. It is violent and may not appeal to everyone.
