Summary: For three hundred thirty-three years, 1565-1898, Spanish colonialists were in touch with the native inhabitants of the mountains of the Cordillera Central, which they had then named and subsequently superficially explored. Spanish conquistadores would sally into the highland fastenesses from lowland bases.
