There are two characters in Philippine literature that are invariably mistaken one for the other namely : the real Leonor Rivera who was Jose Rizal's sweetheart, and the fictional character Maria Clara, who is the heroine of Rizal's two historical novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
