Preface: The science of geomorphology (the study of the landscape) has in the last few years been through something of a revolution. Originally geormorphology was largely a description of landforms but, since it has become possible to actually measure the processes which create and erode the landscape, the subject has developed far more sound theory to explain how the landscape evolves. At the moment, most school books in this area still tend to emphasize the range and diversity of landforms.
