Summary: This book is the first complete study of Andrea Sacchi since Hans Posse's monograph on the artist appeared in 1925. Much new material has emerged since then. The single most important discovery was the life of Sacchi by G.P. Bellori, published by Piacentini in 1942 from the manuscript in Rouen. Bellori records works not mentioned in any other seicento source, some of which it has been possible to trace' he also had access to personal information about the artist through Carlo Maratta, Sacchi's pupil and close friend. Though not totally reliable, Bellori's vita of Sacchi is far more informative than either of the biographies known to Posse, namely those of Passeri and Pascoli. Its discovery alone would have justified a new book on the artist.
