Summary: The purpose of this book is to introduce junior, senior, and first-year graduate students in planning, urban studies, public administration, and related fields to basic statistical, operations research, and other systemic intuition-aiding methods which may be used to help forecast, analyze, and solve some of our present urban and regional problems. The book provides a basic introduction to many of the most useful techniques in these areas. The intent of the book is not to make the student an expert in each technique but rather to provide him with both (1) an understanding of the range and potential uses of the various methods which are available as well as (2) a framework for improving rational decision making. By presenting the range of potential uses of these techniques the book also provides the motivation for encouraging students to take additional courses in associated areas.
