The one assignment a student is likely to hear year after year in many different classes is "A research paper is required for this course." There is no reason why this particular writing assignment should be approached with any more trepidation than a personal essay, for the two have much in common. They are organized and written in much the same way; they differ mainly in the way the information for them is gathered and recorded.
