Part One: national developments in quality assessment -- Part Two. A UK debate about standards -- Part Three. International initiatives on quality in higher education -- Part Four. Institutional experiences of external quality assessment.
The origins of the majority of the chapters in this book lie in papers contributed to two conferences which took place in Paris and London in December 1995 and February 1996. The Paris conference, entitled 'Institutional Responses to Quality Assessment', was organized by the program for Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The chapters by Dill, Massaro, Woodhouse, Ottenwaelter, Thune, Barblan, Engwall, Rasmussen and Baldwin are from this source. The London conference, entitled 'Changing Conceptions of Academic Standards', was organized by the UK Open University's Quality Support Centre (QSC) and the chapters by Brown, Watson, Finch and Becher are based on papers presented there. The chapters by Williams, Thune and Staropoli, and Shah were written specially for this volume. Finally, the editors acknowledge the considerable help provided by Deana Parker of the Quality Support Centre in bringing together the various articles which form the present volume.
