Summary, etc. |
Grounded in the Bio-ecological Systems Theory and Social Cognitive Career Theory, this quantitative exploratory study was undertaken to determine the influential factors and latent constructs affecting the selection of Senior High School (SHS) track among grade 11 students. Three hundred (300) grade 11 students were selected using clustered sampling from secondary schools offering SHS track in Quezon City. The data were gathered using the expert validated researcher-made instrument known as "Factors Affecting the Selection of Track Survey Questionnaire (FASTSO)." It is composed of 60 items with high internal consistency measure (Cronbach Alpha= 938) and is answerable using a 6-point Likert scale. The data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis and descriptive statistics. Results revealed that there were 13 latent constructs affecting the SHS students' choice of SHS track namely: support system, institutional learning environment, program characteristics, career preparation, media, school composition, influencer, student characteristics, recommendation from professionals, school location, cost, student/parent education background, and parents' financial support. Among these latent constructs, the support system appeared to be the most influential factor in the grade 11 students' selection of SHS track while the parent's financial support appeared to be the least influential. Along the selection process, SHS students' decisions are being influenced by different groups of people, organizations, media, school and program characteristics, available educational support and opportunities, and personal characteristics. The identified constructs are influential in making career-relevant choices among SHS students. Recommendations based on emerging results and for the improvement of the instrument were discussed. |
