520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. THIS THIRD EDITION of The Western Heritage, while retaining the fundamental character, structure, and outlook of its earlier versions, has made several significant changes in response to needs expressed by readers and to important trends in the teaching of the history of western civilization in colleges and universities. Since the second edition we have further condensed the narrative and reduced the number of chapters dedicated to the ancient world., We have incorporated substantial coverage of the Byzantine Empire in Chapter Six. Colonial Latin America and its struggle for independence from Spain and Portugal are examined in depth in Chapters Ten, Sixteen, and Twenty. In addition to these changes, we have updated the material on the post-World War II era. We have also tried to improve the style and organization wherever we saw the need. Once again, we have sought fresh historical documents and illustrations, changing about a third of each. The text is now divided into six sections. Each part is introduced with a brief essay, which gives an overview of major trends, influences, and events in each era. Taking note of the continuing interest in social history among both professors and students, we have added new sections throughout the work dealing with that aspect of the human experience from ancient times to our own era. We believe that this new material adds depth, perspective, and interest by telling more about the private lives and concerns of men and women; at the same time, we hope that our account of larger events and institutions gives meaning to the experiences of individuals. This new emphasis will also be found in many of the new documents and illustrations. Notably, the full-color section from the second edition has been transformed into a pictorial essay entitled "Cities and Their People." We have also revised the bibliographies at the end of each chapter, referring to important new works while retaining the most important ones previously included.
