Summary, etc. | Landmarks tells us where we are. They are recognizable and memorable structures or landforms that identify a particular spot in the world. Many are large or prominent, so that we can see them from afar and find our bearings. They are not just a matter of geography, however, but of cultural identity. This book presents 100 of the world's top landmarks, ranging from natural features to iconic skyscrapers. It includes sacred ,ountains (Mount Fuji, Uluru): mysterious relics of ancient cultures (the Great Sphinx, Stonehenge); miracles of engineering (Golden Gate Bridge, the Eiffel Tower) and outstanding architectural achievements (Sydney Opera House, Sagrada Familia, the Gherkin). Many of the worlds most potent landmarks are symbols of power (the White House, Red Square) or of abstract ideas such as freedom (the Statute of Libery) or love (the Taj Mahal). Some commemorate key historical events, while others - such as the Hollywood Sign or Copenhagen's Little Mermaid - have become world famous city icons simply by winning the public's affection. Each one of these sites has a fascinating and other surprising story. Some date back thousands of years, others less than ten, but all have achieved iconic status because they have established a resonance with the people living around them. Landmarks tell us not just where we are, but who we are. |
