This literature review and bibliographic guide on several critical research issues in the contemporary Philippines is an outgrowth of collaborative planning and consultation among Southeast Asian librarians across the United States late in the 1980s. Responding to an initiative by the Henry B. Luce Foundation that encouraged better coordination in the selective purchase and management of the collective library resources of American universities, the Committee on Research Materials on Southeast Asia (CORMOSEA) in May of 1988 designated the South and Southeast Asia Library Service at the University of California, Berkeley, as the site for establishment of a Philippine Documentation Project (PDP). The general aim of this project was to develop and make accessible to scholars and the public a permanent assemblage of resources (books, journals, pamphlets, newsletters, press releases, speeches, and other "elusive" yet vital documents) on contemporary political developments in the Philippines.
